Onyx is a banded variety of the oxide mineral chalcedony. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color (with the exception of some shades, such as purple or blue). Commonly, specimens of onyx contain bands of black and/or white.
Moonstone is a sodium potassium aluminum silicate. Its name is derived from a visual effect, or sheen, caused by light diffraction within a microstructure consisting of a regular succession of feldspar layers. It is composed of two feldspar species, orthoclase and albite.
